Family friendly climbing near Briançon in the French Haute Alps

Rocher Baron is an isolated buttress of superb quartzite rock in the Haute Alps. It is perfect for children and families of all ages thanks to wide open spaces and parking at the base of the crag.

The crag is quite remote and is accessed via a long, steep and winding rough stone road. It seems worse than it is so preserve and you will be rewarded with an idyllic spot for climbing.

There is little shade but the altitude of 1360m makes it climbable much earlier in the Autumn than many of the more famous low-lying provencal regions such as Buoux.

Logistics:

Parking: Plentiful free parking with a picnic area at the base of the crag - albeit a long drive up a steep, rough stone track

Cost: Free

Walk in: N/A

Grade range: 40+ routes from f5c to f7c

Baby friendly: *****

Child friendly: *****

Suitable for buggies: yes

Guidebook: Briançon Climbs, Rolland

Climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death.

Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.

If an area is listed here as baby- or child- friendly it simply means that it is convenient, and does not mean the area is safe. Parents must make their own assessment of risk.

We're a couple of regular climbers who are lucky to have a little boy who loves the outdoors and will happily sit playing quietly in his little tent while we have a burn. We've found ourselves asking questions about baby friendly crags that we thought we'd better write some of them down.
