Baby and child friendly sport climbing on the South Coast of England in sunny Dorset

Barring the odd notable exception, sport climbing in the UK almost always means you're stuck in an ugly hole in the ground somewhere. The cuttings certainly breaks this mould, with plenty of vegetation and beautiful views out over the ocean.

The Cuttings also happens to be one of the UK's most child and baby friendly sport climbing locations. There's plenty of space to set up camp with babies far back from the crag, and likewise children will have plenty of space to maraud about without risk of falling rocks.

Logistics:

Parking: Free parking at Church Ope

Baby friendly: *****

Child friendly: *****

Suitable for buggies: yes (you may need to lift/carry the buggy in places)

Climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death.

Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.

If an area is listed here as baby- or child- friendly it simply means that it is convenient, and does not mean the area is safe. Parents must make their own assessment of risk.

We're a couple of regular climbers who are lucky to have a little boy who loves the outdoors and will happily sit playing quietly in his little tent while we have a burn. We've found ourselves asking questions about baby friendly crags that we thought we'd better write some of them down.
